On-the-Spot Creative Story Writing Contest For East Zone Schools 2008

The "On-The-Spot Creative Story Writing Contest" for East Zone primary schools was held on 31 May 2008. "Others and Me", the selected theme for this year, focused on significant relationships that our youths have with the people around them. A total of 122 bright-eyed and enthusiastic pupils from 24 schools, their parents, siblings and school teachers descended on Learning Point, Simei, to do their part for the community.

The Prize Presentation Ceremony was held at the atrium of Eastpoint Mall on 15 August 2008, with Mr Matthias Yao Chih, Mayor of Southeast District, gracing the occasion as the Guest of Honour. A total of 24 winners walked away with $17,000 worth of cash prizes for themselves as well as their schools' Financial Assistance Scheme and community. Learning Point also sponsored $6,600 worth of scholarships to pupils who exhibited talent in creative writing to help maximize their potential.

The year, the top 3 winners of each level, in consultation with their Principals, were given the opportunity to contribute as much as 70% of their schools' prize money to the South East Community Development Council (SECDC)'s Learning Family programme. This programme benefits young children from low-income families who struggle with literacy and numeracy even before embarking on the journey of their Primary School education.
